Openwashing is a term coined by Michelle Thorne, defined as "to spin a product or company as open, although it is not". Companies will co opt terms like open source for purposes of marketing, but not adopt open licenses or any of the principles of free and open-source software.

Examples

  • NBC Universal has temporarily "open sourced" their intellectual property Serial Experiments Lain, allowing fans to create derivative works. The details are more complicated.
